Abstract:

Documents; minutes; correspondence; newsletters, fliers, and programs; posters; membership lists, rosters, and descriptions of affiliated organizations; financial materials; press releases and newspaper clippings; a dissolution certificate (1982); and a banner. The papers provide a model for an autonomous Jewish community cultural and religious center and the collection's by-laws reflect that vision. Also contains a catalogue of Jewish groups that were serving the Berkeley area and membership lists for many East Bay Jewish organizations. In addition, it has a proclamation signed by Berkeley mayor Eugene ("Gus") Newport, declaring L'Chaim Day (1980); and a draft of Melvin Mogulof's 1980 report for the Jewish Federation on "Planning for a Jewish Community Facility to Serve the Berkeley Area." The latter contains handwritten comments by Jewish Community House members.

The Jewish Community House of Berkeley was an independent inter-generational grassroots organization that was founded by alternative Jewish groups to help coalesce Berkeley's Jewish community in 1978. As such, its original purpose was the creation of a multi-use facility that was based on a democratic, participatory model. The organization developed a network of individuals, groups, and organizations in Berkeley, Calif. It also organized projects that were designed to reach out to unaffiliated Jews, including two L'Chaim festivals, and created various interest groups.
